The Eastern International Region of the American Academy of Religion serves as a gateway into the academic study of religion for regional participants who reside in Western Pennsylvania, the State of New York (excluding New York City), and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The EIR is a benefit to being a member of the AAR, at no extra fee.
This year, the EIR will be hosting our Annual Regional Meeting May 6-7 at Queen's University. The theme of this conference is 'The Other, Persecution and Response.' Our Call for Papers is currently open until February 1, and for more info, see the full CFP here.
Welcome from EIR President Abrahim Khan
Greetings from Toronto. Here’s hoping we can make this year a better one despite pandemic challenges. We are excited for our upcoming Annual Meeting in Spring 2023 in Kingston, Ontario. I am also currently looking forward the the AAR's Annual Meeting in Denver, where over two dozen scholars from the region are presenting research.
I’m happy to share that I recently visited Slovakia in October 2022. Banska Stiavnica, Slovakia, has an unusual architectural structure that caught my attention when I was there in October 2022. Have a look at it through the link below. Built by Jesuits 1755-65, the column structure was erected as a mark of gratitude for having survived the 1710 plague that wiped out almost half of the town's residents. In Baroque style, it has for its Trinity at its apex the divine virtues: faith hope, and love. Have a look at the column here.
We want to hear from you to create and sustain an engaging and creative community of scholars in studying different aspects of religion. Use the new website feature [“Share News” link] to share your publications, events, conferences, programming suggestions, job listings, grants availability, publications, events, and other activities with Regional members. Our intention is to help members widen networks and spark conversations with scholars across the Regions. Check out the AAR-EIR Twitter feed as well as our Facebook pages for Members and Students for updates and news throughout the year.
